After getting Anna home and settled into bed with her teddy bear tucked under her arm, Luke poured himself a glass of water and took a long drink. He’d kissed Shelby again. She’d tumbled into his arms, smelled so sweet and felt so good. Her mouth had curved just so, and her hair draped like silk over her cheeks, the blue highlights shimmering. The setting sun had cast a soft light on her face, illuminating her eyelashes and adding a subtle shimmer to her eyes. She’d met him halfway. The kiss had been a taste of heaven. A force of nature.

If they hadn’t heard the horn, how far would they have gone? His desire hadn’t abated. If anything, he wanted her even more. He put the glass in the dishwasher, set a detergent pod inside and pressed the button for the normal cycle. The machine hummed. Luke turned off the overhead lights.

The mundane nature of the chores struck him as funny, but his subsequent laugh came out as more of a harsh cough. What did he have to offer Shelby? He was a widowed dad rehabbing a building, opening a business and developing roots. She was a global adventure photographer. She’d been to over one hundred countries and five continents. She lived in hipster Seattle. No wonder she seldom visited boring Beaumont except for several days each year. She wouldn’t even be staying if not for her magazine spreads. His head knew the truth—they had no future—but his heart didn’t care.

He’d been a good husband to Maren, after he’d finally agreed to date her. But he’d never shared with her the deep, instinctive connection he’d had with Shelby, as if he and Shelby were two halves forged by fate to create one perfect whole. He was himself when he was around her—he didn’t pretend to be anyone else or feel pressured to work in a career he didn’t enjoy. When Shelby smiled, his entire heart and mind—even the darkest corners—filled with light.

She’d take a piece of his heart with her when she left two weekends from now, which seemed a fair penance for his not being man enough to trust in her love long ago. He certainly didn’t deserve it now. He climbed into bed and tried to sleep.

About five minutes later, his bedroom light flipped on and Anna stood in the doorway. “Dad? I had a bad dream.”

“It’s okay. Come here.” He lifted the covers, letting her crawl under. She curled next to him, tossing her arm over his T-shirt. He stroked her hair until she fell back asleep. Then he gently lifted her up and put her back in her bed, smoothing out her nightgown and tucking her teddy bear safely under her arm. His life was raising Anna and opening a business in Beaumont.

Shelby belonged to the world. He’d never find anyone else like her. But no matter what happened over the next two weeks, she was leaving. It would be unfair to ask her to stay.
